Media Player

[newbie]

Recently I had problem with quick time media player and got rid off it great
difficulty.
My friend has suggested me to download VLC media player.
Being a newbie AI don't want to download anything about which I don't know.
Kindly advice about the plus and minuses of VLC media player.
