Need good free media player to play avi files. I have tried real player
and windows media and neither will

I'm interested in this one. Does it have do bookmarks when watching
videos? I looked on the site, but saw nothing about it.

To be honest I don't know. I only got it to use instead of using Real
Player.

I've had it a year now and still havn't used it enough to get to the
bottom of all it's features.

The one option I have found that might be of interest is the ability
to restart viewing at the last position reached.

sorry I couldn't be of more help.

They will play AVIs, you just need the correct codecs. Try FFDShow

Thanks foe RE:
2 recommendations and a third that said any will work with the correct
codecs. Will either of the 2 recommendations work with out having to
install any updates, plugins, etc. or those codecs (what ever they are)
from the getgo.
How do I uninstall the WMP9? It isn't in the add/remove programs and no
uninstall to click any place that I can find.

Actually, that *is* a help. Thanks.

With any player you will need the codecs.

As far as I remember I didn't have to download anything extra to play
avi's, but I did have Real Player and QuickTime installed at that
time.

There are links to all the codecs you will need on the website.

small download? 11, 267,000 bytes?
My dowmload was 6,377,789. MP9 which I couldn't make work is 13,951,112
and that is still a little larger than the 11,267,000 you say videolan
is. I'm no computer guro, all I can do is read in properties what size
it is, If that isn't right I'm sorry if I mislead anyone about small.

Just to clarify, the Zip is 11,267,534 bytes, the installer is
6,377,789. (I know it sounds backwards, the installer being smaller,
but that's correct.)

ok....I see the differences....(I am taking a look anyway--it seems like
a clever program..LOTS of arcane prefs in the video which I don't
understand yet.)
thanks for the find...

This is my current personal favorite video player, but it doesn't play
some AVIs as well as...

This is a good one as well, and one of the best at playing AVIs.
WMP sucks..
*rest snipped*

The thing about WMP is that it's more than just a player, but it's a
media library, interfaces with portable devices, etc. As just a
player, I agree, it's not that great, but as a whole it's not bad at
all.
