I have noticed on Xp SP1 the windows media patch kb819639 does not install the validation key said in the articles. I was wondering why this may be and also how I can work around this flaw in this security patch.

Thanks

Hi

The key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows Media Player\wm819639
with values/subkeys is created for me when I install this update on
a Windows XP computer that has MediaPlayer 9 installed. You do have
MediaPlayer 9 installed and not 8?

What version of the media player 9 did you install. The latest version has it and will not run the patch, it also does not have the vaildation keys. The only time I saw those values/keys installed is with SP2, that dont come out until later so for now I am left with nothing of an option.

How may times was this checked before it was sent out for production, and how much did it get tested as new version came out to make sure it had the patch. I hate hitting an extra button for a message that says "This update can only be applied to Windows Media Player 9. If Windows Mediaa Player 9 is Installed, this version already includes the update"

If I wanted to update a version with it installed I would run it, I dont. The keys in my script dont exist and it drives me nuts clicking it.

It seems obvious once something is released it is forgoten, something as simple as a few values when media player installs.

Hi

This was how I tested:

Started with WinXP SP1 with MP ver. 8

Browsed to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp
and downloaded and installed latest version of MP ver. 9.

Then I installed the 819639 update. It installed fine, and then
I looked for the registry key and found it.
