Media Player hangs when playing certain DVDs

I have XP Pro, SP1 with all the latest critical updates
installed. We seem to be having trouble with certain DVD
movies freezing up at various places. But other DVD
movies play with almost no glitches (although there is
almost always a momentary pause in any DVD movie we
play). A techie at work told me that I probably need to
search for and install a patch regarding playing Disney
DVDs (among others) under the "Windows XP" list. Disney
DVDs do appear to be the worst offenders, but I can't
find any such patch under the Windows update listings.
Any ideas, where I can find this patch to see if it helps?

Just a follow-up. I currently have two rented DVDs: one from Disney,
and one from Universal. The Universal DVD works fine on my machine, but
the Disney one won't play past the menu. I tried the Disney DVD in my
techie's computer (similar machine and same OS)and it works just fine on
his machine. This leads him to conclude that the problem is software
related (Windows) rather than DVD related, but he can't find the Disney
patch because he only saw it on Windows update when he installed it.
Any idea where I can find this patch?
