Media Player disappears

My XP is all of 3 days old. Media Player icon has disappeared and MP cant be accessed through the start menu either. Tried to play a CD and all I get is a hung up machine. Going crazy here. Tried to reload good old W98 MedPalayer 7 but was told this was unnecessary as "all complonents are in my operating system>" Fine, but where are they hiding. And why??
 
Try removing MediaPlayer using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel then
reinstalling it.
Then, in all likelyhood you'll need to go to Windows Update and redownload
Media Player 9, assuming you downloaded it in the 1st place

Hi Chump,

Try reinstalling the Windows Media Player. Go to the Control Panel/Folder
Options/View tab, set it to "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck
"Hide protected operating system files [recommended]". Also uncheck "Hide
extensions for known file types".

Then, open Windows Explorer from Start/All Programs and go to the
C:\Windows\Inf folder. Locate the wmp.inf file, right-click it and choose
install.

You may need to either insert your WinXP CD or know where your I386 folder
is located on the hard drive. You may also need to know where the
\ServicePackFiles folder is (usually under the Windows directory).
