Media Centre re-install

T

Tx2

My Media Centre crashes every time I load it. I can only guess that the
..exe has corrupted in some way.

Anyone care to help me out with how to re-install it?

I have the orginal XP MCE disc from Dell.

Without knowing more details (what does "crashes every time mean? any
error messages? what changed between the time it worked and the time it
didn't?), there is no way of knowing whether a reinstall is called for
or if it will even help. If you want focused help with the problem,
please see this link for the details you need to include in your next post:

That said, if you just want to do a clean install, here are instructions:

What you will need on-hand

After you do the XP install, you'll need to use Dell's Resource CD and
install the drivers. If you didn't get a physical Resource CD, go to
Dell's website and download all the drivers and any specialized MCE
software for your specific model machine. Burn to cd-r to have available
after the clean install.

XP as an OS works fine, it is only when i try to start Media Centre
using the shortcut icon off the Start menu, that the program crashes.
The shortcut points to C:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehshell.exe

The crash also occurs if I start media centre using the direct .exe

There are no error messages, except a "generating crash report" dialogue
box.

I was simply changing the preferences of media centre, when the whole
thing froze, and I was unable to start it thereafter.

I need to install only the media centre component of XP, not XP itself.

Hope that clarifies the situation?

Yes, it does clarify the situation. Post those details in the Media
Center newsgroup. It may be a known issue and the MCE experts will be
able to help you pinpoint the reason for the error instead of you having
to reinstall Windows.

microsoft.public.windowsxp.mediacenter

When you post there, make sure you also answer the The First Question Of
Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things worked and the
time they didn't? You should also include some details about your
computer, any relevant history of the machine, and the version of MCE.

Good luck,

Sorry, that group doesn't appear on my news server, so I wasn't aware it
existed otherwise I most certainly would have posted there.

However, I did Google the problem, found an answer (oddly enough not in
the aformentioned group) applied it, and resolved the issue.

I'm glad you got it solved. If you are accessing the MS newsgroups
through your ISP's news server or another news service, you might want
to get them directly. The server is msnews.microsoft.com. I see you use
Gravity - I loved that app when I used Windows; it's a great newsreader.
