Media Center kills channel edits when listing is updated

How do I force Media Center to remember what channels I want listed in the
guide?
I removed channels I don't actually get from the cable TV provider, as
they aren't paid for (they are just static) - using "edit channels" (you
uncheck the box by each unwanted channel). When an automatic or manual
listing update is done, the channel listing get reverted back, and the Guide
shows to unwanted channels in the listing again.
(Windows XP Media Center edition with all the most recent service
packs/rollups/updates.)

I have found many people asking this question by searching with Google, and
not a single suggested solution.

Did you try editing the listing, instead of editing the channel?
