Mechanics of setting up RD

Hi everyone

I need to set RD up but have not looked into it with any detail yet. It's
likely that I'll have the two laptops over 40 miles apart and I need to
ensure that everything's set up correctly. Whilst I could arrange for
someone to be at the other end on a telephone line to press buttons, alter
settings etc. at my suggestion, it would be far easier to set things up when
the laptops are adjacent physically.

I have a router at each end and wonder if it's possible to set both laptops
up whilst plugged into the same router. Obviously, they'll have a different
local address (for instance 192.168.0.6 and 192.168.0.7) but the same
external address (for instance 231.42.116.87). Can I do this whilst they're
both connected in this way or will the router and setup that I have merely
regard the laptops as sharing files etc. through the router? If I can't set
RD up in this way, how do I do it? I'd prefer not to have the laptops
separated physically by many miles, just in case my colleague at the other
end can't resolve a particular problem on the end of a telephone line and I
have to make a car journey.

Sorry if this seems a trivial question but, as mentioned above, I've not
looked into the mechanics of setting RD up in any detail.

Thanks for your time.
