Desktop Database Dance
A new version of SQL Server provides the answer to a desktop database
engine.

by Greg DeMichillie

printer-friendly version PRINT FORMAT
February 2007

For many years, Microsoft had two database engines, the Jet engine
used by Access and Visual Basic, and SQL Server. But Jet has been
riding off into the sunset for the better part of six years, helped
along by the move to the .NET Framework and retirement of VB6. That's
left a hole in Microsoft's developer platform. The company needed a
database engine that can be deployed with a desktop application
without having to license and deploy a full-blown copy of SQL Server.
Now, Microsoft is finally filling that hole with a new version of SQL
Server.

'riding off into the sunset'

I think that anyone using MDB for anything should be fired and then
spit upon

Rubbish.

ACE in A2007 replaces Jet.

And the author of that article is "Greg DeMichillie analyzes and writes about
Microsoft's development platform and tools for Directions on Microsoft, a research
firm dedicated to tracking Microsoft. He was previously the group program manager at
Microsoft responsible for the overall design and feature set for Visual C# and C++. A
founding member of the C# language team, DeMichillie was a key contributor to the
initial design and development of .NET. "

So he's not a Microsoft employee and clearly has little or no clue about Access.

Also note that article talks about Desktop applications. Well, Access is meant for
networks.

ACE in A2007 replaces Jet.

ACE *is* Jet, just the next version of it. The old Jet will continue
to exist in Windows and have its own development path (most likely
just in maintenance mode, I'd wager).

ACE *is* Jet *is* DEAD. The old Jet will continue
to exist in Windows; but there haven't been any tangible benefits /
improvements to Jet in 15 years

It is already possible to use SQL Server Express 2005 in order to use
SQL Server without having a real server instance.
Now there is _NO_ overhead to using SQL Server.

you don't need to register a database; you don't need to do anything

Do you not read the news, kid?
