MDAC Installation Issues

I recently installed Visual Studio 2003 and cannot connect to
databases from VB. When I click Tools > Connect to Databases, no
dialogue box opens in Visual Studio.

Additionally, when I create a new blank .udl Microsoft Data Link file
through Notepad, and then try to open this file, I get the following
error:

Error loading C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\System\OLEDB~1\oledb32.dll
The specified module could not be found.

According to web searches and colleagues at work, this error may come
from not having MDAC installed properly. However, I have attempted
to install MDAC 2.7 SP1 Refresh repeatedly, but to no avail. I ran
the Component Checker from the Microsoft site, and it cannot determine
what version of MDAC is installed.

I am running Windows XP Home with SP2. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Hi,

I have seen similar issue several times in a postings. Most likely
oledb32.dll exists, but not registered. Try to register it manually. If it
does not help post again

I un-installed XP SP2. I then installed MDAC 2.8 from Microsoft.
Everything works now. Is there a known issue with SP2?

I have seen it with MDAC 2.7, but hard to say if it is an issue with SP2 or
just some sort of corrupted installation

I am also having a very similar problem -- I upgraded my MDAC from 2.7 to 2.8
in hopes of getting visual studio .NET 2003 to recognize SQL SERVER Express
(the new one) and I think I have traced the problem to the absence of
oledb32.dll. It's not in my file system, it's not in the ODBC area of the
administrative portion of my control panel ... and I can't seem to get it
onto my system by installing either 2.7 or 2.8. Is is possible for me to get
this dll some other way? I think I can manually add it if I can just get it.

Thank you,
Stephanie
