MCE & SP2

I have a PC I had built new, about a year and a half ago. It is loaded up
with MCE 2005. I have
the original OEM MS MCE CDs.

My system recently crashed, and after much trouble shooting, my final
solution was to reload MCE.
The first CD got part way thru in the "Preparing" phase. It then stopped
and asked that I put in
Windows XP Professional SP2 disk. That disk I did not have. However, I had
downloaded it earlier and burned it to a CD and managed to get going again.

My question is, whey would the install ask for SP2? I was under the
impression that MCE 2005 at that time (about August 2005), already had SP2
in it? No?

A common point of confusion.

When it asks for the "Windows XP SP2" disc it's asking for disc one to be
put back in. (and yes MCE 2005 includes SP2)

Unfortunately if you finished out the install without doing so you'll have
to start over.

Really?? For sure??

I'm sure (although it's been a confusing day), that when it first asked
for SP2, I did put it CD1 (as a matter of fact it was still in; I had
not removed it yet). When I then click OK, it keeps repeating that it
wants SP2. As I mentioned, I do have a copy of an exploded SP2 on CD
and I could put that in and browse to the file it wanted.

I have finished the re-install, and ran update to get the critical
fixes. I have run update again for the non-critical fixes and it hangs
when installing .NET 1.1.. Given where I'm at now, am I hosed? Basic
stuff works.

Do I realllllly have to re-load MCE??? :-((

per my last append:
One of the files it was looking for in my last install attemp was NT5INF.CA_
Using the SP2 CD I had I managed to drill down to that file and install
continued. This happened for about 4 different files.

I checked both CD1 and CD2 MCE disks and do not see that file anywhere.
Perphaps it's in a CAB file?

I'm just concerned that when I re-install I'm going to get prompted
again to insert SP2 disk, and I'll have the same problem.

When I called the folks that built the machine they said that 'oh yeah,
SP2 was not out yet, and they would gladly burn me a copy of SP2'. But
that's about a 20 mile drive from here. I presume they would just give
me the same SP2 I have.

To get a CD version of SP2, do you just expand the files and burn them
to a CD, or just copy the 266mb .EXE file to a CD? I've tried both.

Yes I am quite sure that when, following the completion of disc 2 setup
calls for the "Windows XP SP2" disc it's asking for disc 1 to be reinserted.
It would not be asking for a separate Service Pack 2 disc as SP2 is included
in MCE 2005. (are you sure you have MCE 2005?)

The point where setup 'should' ask for the "Windows XP SP2" (disc1) is after
completing the Media Center portion of the install (disc2.)

If you're saying that it asked for the "Windows XP SP2" disc, (disc1) before
ever getting to disc2 it sounds like disc1 is damaged.

Did you ever get to disc2? If yes, what happened after disc2?

You say "basic stuff works." I don't know what you consider "basic stuff."
If the Media Center installation was aborted before it was complete and you
don't have the Media Center components then yes you'll have to start from
scratch.

You might want to repost to microsoft.public.windows.mediacenter .

Thanks for the replies.
I re-installed MCE by inserting the disc and taking the update option.
Everything seemed to go fine. When it asked for SP2, I put in the disc1
(disk2 was in there), and away it went.
I did get an error towards the end saying there was an error registering
MCE and to check a log. I did, and the only error I saw was about the
log file being full.

I'm just now trying to get MCE to recognize my TV tuner.

If I have related questions/problems, I will post them in mediacenter.
