I'm currently using VirusScan 5 which , although I still get free virus
database updates, it no-longer updates the detection engine. It's served
me well so far...but I'm wondering if I should invest in the latest
VirusScan or use freeware AVG 6.

Advice greatly appreciated.

This is a freeware site. It's impossible to get an unbiased opinion here. :)

All seriousness aside, AVG and Avast are serious AV scanners, and work well.
If you decide to go with payware, consider Nod32. It's light, fast,
unobtrusive, and reliable.

I was using VirusScan 6, which I had configured as I liked it. No
automatic scanning, updates, internet connection, etc, as I prefer to run
them all manually.

I "upgraded" to latest VirusScan but found it was excessively intrusive.
It put its hooks in everywhere, and despite me attempting to configure it
for manual scanning, updates, etc, it ignored the options I set and still
insisted in constantly connecting to the McAfee website. I had to block it
at my firewall (which then meant manual updates were blocked as well). It
also insisted in running several unwanted (by me) modules at Windows
startup, and if I deleted them from the Windows startup list, it just put
all the entries back next I used it!

I dumped it and switched to using AVG6 (and subsequently AVG7), and I am
very happy with it. Easier to control and MUCH better behaved!

You could have the best of both worlds. It's a bad idea to have two
antivirus programs running in the background at the same time, but you could
install and run AVG in conjunction with McAfee *if* you disable the
full-time features of one or the other. I did this for several years with
McAfee and Norton: like you, I was able to get definition but not engine
updates for McAfee, so I set it to scan on demand only and set Norton to run
full time. This allowed me to use McAfee for a "second opinion" on
suspicious files, or for full system scans.

Since the DAT updates from McAfee are still free, you may as well take them.
And in the meantime, AVG is also free.

Ian.

McAfee promply let the blaster worm through. I was using their firewall,
too. I immediately went back to AVG (free) and Kerio (free) and have not
had a problem since.

They say you get what you pay for, but in this case that's not true!!!!!!
