McShield.exe eats up a lot of CPU.

Is there a good procedure for turning off McAfee
prior to messing with large files?

After installation, it takes much longer to do things
like copying large folders.

Disabling AV and firewall in the Security
Center doesn't help.

TIA, Rick

What other Mcafee programs are you running. This high cpu usage seen running
vs8 with spamkiller or Privacy service loaded as well.

Some discussions but nothing much re turning it off. usual thought is to
scan default files only.

Problem is vs8 cannot skip file types/folders like vs7 could which can be a
workaround.

This issue being looked into you can search that forum for posts re it.

Thanks, Tony.
I'm running AV and firewall only, so far.
You sound like it will be even worse if I add Privacy.
Not good.
I'll look at the forums.

Tony,

As to link (1) below ...
I don't find the files that are mentioned.
I have 4 mc*.tmp files, all 1k or less.
Maybe I installed after build 8017.

Link (2) ...
In VS/Options/Advanced, "Program files and documents only"
was already selected. I don't know the default, but I may
have changed to this setting from reading messages in
this or in OE NGs.
Same with VS/Options, where "Scan e-mail and attachments"
is unchecked. "Help" says that it is checked by default, so
I must have changed it. If I remember correctly, it can be
unchecked since attachments will be scanned when they
are opened.

Link (3) ...
KB 819634 refers Hotfix 811493, but in reference to XP with SP1.
I'm running Win2kPro. And, I don't see this hotfix listed when I
review the update history.

Tonight, I updated to 8.0.25. Maybe things will be better. :)
I'll watch it for a while.

Also, I have "Notify me before downloading any updates" checked.
Tonight, I learned that although it notified me, it didn't wait until
I responded. (Grrrrr!) I had another process running, so I
left the notice on the screen, intending to download and
install when the other process ended. Instead, the notification
went away, the download and install proceeded, and I was
instructed to restart. (!) Do you know of a way to prevent
this without switching to totally manual updates?

Thanks,

Rick

I suggest posting to that forum ie the vs8 one.

I have update set to prompt me and works fine. By posting we will not lose
your post as i will here as it moves down.
