McAfee VirusScan automatic scan problem

McAfee VirusScan begins an automatic scan upon bootup once every few days.
The scan takes over an hour, and while it runs, my computer is slowed down
intolerably. I've found no way to change the scheduling of or stop these
scans. Can this be done? If so, how? Thank you for any advice you can
provide.

Thanks for the response, Dave.
I have retail I suppose, as I purchased it - "McAfee Security Center."

This works for me: right-click on the animated icon in the System Tray -
it opens a menu that include "Cancel Scan"
