McAfee VirusScan alternatives?

I've only ever used McAfee's VirusScan -- and I've been doing so for a
long time. I have been very happy with the product except for their
asinine decision to tie their product's download and upgrade processes
to IE.

Today I got the VirusScan "update" message which actually told me it was
time to buy the new version (emphasis there, of course) or renew my dat
file updating.

Ironically, only two days ago I wasted over two hours battling them to
get support for their product when the most recent SecurityCenter update
wrecked their product. The time wasted was, of course, due to their
insistence that VirusScan updates *only* work with IE, something which
is completely untrue. It takes a lot of determination to find someone
who will admit that they've been providing an ActiveX component so their
product works with Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox ever since they went MS-crazy.

I would have put up with that for another year except for one thing: I
now cannot even purchase the update from their site unless I use IE!
Talk about stupid and short-sighted. I have never encountered a site
which would only allow me to buy products from them if I used IE.

So, I'm fed up. I'd like to know what the best alternative(s) to
VirusScan are. I'm not looking for a free or less expensive product --
unless one such is superior to VirusScan. I want something that is at
the very least as good as if not better than it.

I'd greatly appreciate any advice you can provide. It would help me a
lot if as well as telling me what product(s) you'd recommend, you give
me some idea why the recommended product is good.

Many thanks in advance.

If you are in a antivirus server and client scehario, IMHO, there is nothing
better than Trend Micro's Officescan product for desktop protection. I've
been using it for years. I tried Norton/Symantec and McAfee first. Both a
POS as far as I'm concerned.

Oh... I neglected to include the "why" you asked for. Also change scehario
above to scenario! LOL.

Anyway, ease of centralized management is probably Officescan's greatest
benefit. It is virtually a "Load it and forget it" product. Hands off to the
max. It is managed via a web browser, but is not IE specific AFAIK. Now, I
understand that you don't really want to "forget" your antivirus protection.
I'm just trying to get across the point that Officescan is analogous to a
car you can drive for 50 thousand miles or more and never do anything but
put in gas. There is a 30-day trial so you can test "features" yourself. And
read about them.

Thank you, both to you and Frankster. Time for me to dig into checking
them out.
