Computer (Vista premium) came installed with McAfee. Trial period is almost
over. Downloaded AVG Anti virus and have Windows Defender installed. Is this
adequate protection? Or is McAfee also needed?

AVG,Defender and the Windows firewall should provide adequate protection.

Should be adequate but be careful not to have 2 anti-virus applications
installed together. They will clash., i.e. AVG or McAfee VirusScan but
not both.

There is nothing wrong with using two anti-virus systems.
(It's not sensible, but it should work).

Perhaps you're thinking of firewalls, which can have some issues?

I would dump McAfee and AVG and get Avast. Do a custom install without
email protection.

Why dump AVG?

Even with email scanning not installed it still scans the EML files as they
are saved. This appears to create problems and in Vista there does not
appear to be any way to exempt EML files from AVG's scanning.
