McAfee Security Center & Windows Defender

Beta versions of Defender were fine, but Version 1 causes a problem with
McAfee SecurityCenter System Guards. At each boot up McAfee Security Center
7 reports that it has detected a potentially unauthorized change to my
computer (\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe) etc. I select "Allow this change"
and "Remember this action" but I get the same message at the next restart.

SystemGuard Name: Shared Task Scheduler
Change: File Modified

As a temp measure I have disabled SystemGuard protection for the Shared Task
Scheduler but obviously this isn't ideal.

I've asked McAfee about it and they say the request needs to go from me to
MS. However with OEM Win XP I do not get direct support from MS.

Can anyone please offer any help on this?
TIA

Hello linefeed,

Just for the record. What versions are you now showing? Mine indicates

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1904.0
Definition Version: 1.14.1940.2

Does that check out with you?

Yes that's what I've got here

Hi linefeed,

1593 That upgrade includes up to two free telephone support calls to
Microsoft in support of it.

I'd recommend calling 1-866-pcsafety if you are in the U.S. or Canada.
Elsewhere, call your local Microsoft subsidiary, or the number for paid
support in your locale--and ask for the free help related to Windows Defender
Version: 1.1.1593.0 issues. This help extends to spyware removal as well.

Note that you will need to call (or email) Microsoft PSS for this. Simply
state that you are looking for this fix and don't discuss other issues on
the call, and there won't be any charge--call the number for paid support in
your area.

I called Microsoft Support. They asked me to re-enable SystemGuard
protection for the Shared Task Scheduler and reboot but when I did that there
was no warning message. Either the process of disabling/re-enabling
SystemGuard cleared the problem or an update to Defender received in the last
two days has cleared it. The tech support man said there is a known conflict
and if it returns to try uninstalling both MacAfee and Defender, then
re-installing Defender followed by McAfee.
Thanks for the help.
