My 11 month Mcafee popup nag saying pay and renew started last night. Been
watching this NG for past few months. Wonder what everyone's opinion is of
Grisoft's Free AVG before I do full uninstall of Mcafee and take the big
plunge into a freeware antivirus? Yikes!? Opinions please???

In the top 3 free ones with avast and antivir. The email scanner is
useless (if your into or used to having email scanning) though as it
scans the inbox.dbx folder after arrival.Antivir doesnt have an email
scanner .Avast email scanning is the best by far.Not much between them
detection/cleaning wise. All 3 probably not as good at overall detection
/cleaning as the well know paid for AVs , but they are free and seem
adequate for most users needs.

I bought Mcafee Internet (Firewall + virus prot/scanner).
My system stability took a downward turn, with frequent IE or File
Explorere lock-ups/crashes. My CD RW kept crashing when trying to burn
..... and most wierdly about 75% of all boots would result in an
'MMSYSTEM007 System Error' ... which would result in no midi operation.

When my 'licence' for McAfee ran out, I just de-installed (which messed
things up even more... as de-install took some apparently needed DLLs
with it - which I had to re-install).

I replaced with Kiero firewall and AVG virus scanner... and have not had
any problems since.

I spent many hours on the McAfee tech support 'chat room'... but they
never could sort out the problems.

Anyway, I am happy now !!!
