McAfee not allowing XP to complete shut-down

Hi all,
My Hp pavilion ze 1585 does not properly shutdown. Upon choosing turn
off or restart, the computer goes into the shut-down screen, saves
settings, and then stalls on the "windows is shutting down/restarting"
screen. This screen will stay up indefinitey, forcing me to manually
turn off the computer a minute or so after this happens. The hard
drive light does not come on while this is happening. My brother
looked at the dos script for the shut down process (above my head, but
I could be walked though it if someone will guide me) and told me that
McAfee was holding up the process, and that I should look around for
solutions on the web, but I cannot find anyone with XP who has had this
problem. I followed the suggested fix for '98, which was to download
and run symantec's "smevent" update, but that did not solve the
problem. I fear that I am destroying my hard drive with all of this
manual shutting-down.

Please help.

If you have McAfee, then running a Symantec program is useless. You don't
have both Norton products *and* McAfee products installed, do you? If you
do, then that's the cause of your problem.

If the shutdown issue is really caused by McAfee and you don't have Symantec
products installed, contact McAfee tech support for problems with their
software.
