Hello All!
If this is regarded as OT for the group, I apologize but I think my
experience could be useful. I don't intend to respond to comments about
the relative merits of McAfee, Norton and other security programs.
I have had a McAfee security suite on my XP machine for years and I pay
for annual updates. I recently bought a lap-top that I use with the
router (FIOS) on the basic machine. When I found that McAfee included
three licenses, I wanted to install it on the laptop after the installed
30-day free trial of Norton expired.
I had to get help from McAfee but installation was essentially simple,
just involving downloading from the McAfee site, which knew about my
number of licenses. There was one alarming message, the McAfee program
indicated that the Norton suite, even expired, would interfere and I had
not run the XP program removal section from the Control Panel.
I was a little apprehensive about doing a removal while in the middle of
the McAfee installation but I went ahead and removed Norton. I was
informed that a restart would be necessary, so it seemed I had no
choice. To my surprise, the installation program did not get lost and
resumed and finished successfully.
I can now see that I should have removed the Norton program before
downloading the McAfee installer but it is interesting that it actually
worked and I did not have to go back to McAfee and download the
installer again.
