McAfee for 365 days

A year ago I installed McAfee VirusScan 6, which I was confused and thought
was new but 7 was new.

Anyway, 365 days later it stopped updating and informed me I had to pay $15
for another year of updates. I have read the box and the manual closely and
I can't find any mention of expiring after 365 days. Has everybody else had
this happen? How can they get away with not mentioning the $15 renewal
anywhere on the box or in the manual?

Perhaps a post with the same question to McAfee's customer service or
support department may get you an answer sooner than posting the question in
this newsgroup.

This is standard AV practice. This is the way it is with the Retail versions on McAfee and
Norton AV software.

$15.00 is very reasonable.

Actually, McAfee is quite clear that their retail product includes a
subscription. It is identified in the manual (I am looking at it as I write
this) and also on their website. IIRC, it was also on the box itself. In
any case, when you first installed the application, you registered your
subscription with McAfee to get the updates, and there was an expiration
date for the subscription entered in your control panel. Don't know how one
could have missed all that.

Paid AV products charge on a subscription basis.

If you don't want to pay for subscriptions you can uninstall McAfee and
install a free AV checker.

along with about fifty other product registrations I have in My Documents.

Apparently things changed between the time I installed McAfee 6 and the
365th day.
 
It might not state exactly "365 days."

I'm sure it does state something to the effect of a yearly subscription.

Nothing changed except maybe your density.

I am not refering to the XP Control Panel. I am referring to the McAfee
Anti-Virus Control Panel, which you can open as you would any other program.

Also, the last time a checked, a yearly subscription would be expected to
last for 365 days.

And that is the end of spoon feeding for you.
