My McAfee(came with computer and paid up) has been nicely updating.
Suddenly, Live Update asks to log in; but does not recognize my user name
(email) or password. Support suggests messing with register. No thanks. I
would uninstall and reinstall, but am afraid would not recognize me. Buy a
different AV

Why?
Which McAfee product? You could ever download free updates, at least I am
for the last 3 years.

One of the actions of some viruses is to mess with anti-virus software
to nullify its effects. Blocking updates would stop you from receiving
protection against any future viruses. Don't blame McAfee. If you are
thinking of buying another AV you might as well try uninstall &
reinstall. What have you got to lose, aside from your sanity.

P.S. - Is your firewall on?

Live Update is a Norton/Symantec construct. Not McAfee -- you are confused !

Got message part way through responding to these answers that worm activity
was detected in last few emails sent, which were all only these responses.
So stopped the emails.Anyway. McAfee started auto downloads.
