Running McAfee 9.0 under Win XP Pro. Lately the anti virus is going
spontaneously to "Disabled" status - the task bar icon changes to black
versus red and I then have to manually "Enable" so AV resumes.

The problem is described several times in the McAfee support forum but I
haven't read a definite answer and did not find mention in their
troubleshooting files. Seems to be a problem with a fair number of
installations - but I'm still in need of a fix or is the "fix" in reverting
back to an earlier version of the program?

Even without a fix I'd like an audible warning beep when the status switches
to disabled - that'd help. Right now it depends on simply noticing the color
change in the "M" icon and I usually don't see it change - only notice it
some time later so never sure how much email I've pulled down in the diabled
status.

..... I have the exact same problem but with McAfee v8.0 and running WinXP
Home. When I first installed v8.0 it initially ran OK and kept itself
running but soon afterwards it started to turn itself off soon after
completing its startup scans - at first I thought it was a conflict with
Ad-aware SE Plus which I upgraded but I think now it is being caused by XP
SP2. When I installed SP2 it tried to install Micro$oft's new security
center but since I had already had installed & running McAfee's security
center I opted to keep McAfee's. Thats when I think McAfee started turning
itself soon after startup.
It is probably easy to fix - maybe just changing a line and or parameter in
a startup file somewhere but I am hesitant to try thinking I may make it
worse instead of better.

Ok will rechase our tech for official comment I assume you have tried a full
cleanup uninstall/reinstall path. I am running on SP1 still and have no
issues. But I will have to upgrade soon.

Will get back to you after TG day as Tech is off then

Mcafeehelp tech Brett has seen this happen but to date hasnt seen a reason
for it as his pc is on SP2 and all fine. Mcafee will be looking into what
actually causes this.I would assume
