Does anyone know of a small reader suitable to extract emails in a
format better then wordpad?
I've got a 10meg mbx file here, which for some reason does not like to
be imported into OE 5.5 and I am sure there must be a utility somewhere
available to get rid of the gobbledegook and just list the contents in
plain text. Or am I asking too much?
A hopeful Fred.

mbx IS a plaintext format. What you may be looking at are
messages composed in HTML. Try using NoteTab Lite - it will
strip HTML tags.

There are a couple of programs you might want to have a look at.

If your MBX file is OE4 MBX format:
MBXtract
http://www.oehelp.com/MBXtract/Default.aspx
Extracts messages from MBX file and put each message in a separate EML file.

If your MBX file is Eudora/Netscape/UNIX MBOX format:
Mbox2eml
http://people.freenet.de/ukrebs/mbox2eml.html
Mbox2eml will read a mbox-format mailbox file, and will export the messages
to individual .eml files. You can drag and drop the .eml files into Outlook
Express.

For the heck of it, two other conversion utilities:
Dbxconv
http://people.freenet.de/ukrebs/dbxconv.html
Converts Outlook Express .dbx format either to mbox format file, or to
individual .eml files.

DBXtract
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
DBXtract.exe extracts all mail and news messages from individual dbx files.
After extracting the messages one can drag them from a Windows Explorer
folder into an Outlook Express mail folder.

If you are an OE user with an mbx file, then I assume this is from an earlier version of OE. If so, there is a utility MBXtract which extracts all mail and news messages from individual mbx files: http://chattanooga.net/~scochran/MBXtract.htm.

If you really mean something else, apologies!

Thanks Christopher, Spoon2001 and nine9feet!
I've downloaded notepad lite and I am sure it will be useful sooner or
later, but it seems to be a steep learning curve for the afflicted ( But
it does seem to be fun to have a play with another time).

However, MBXtract was exactly what I was looking for, so award
yourselves some gold stars for coming up trumps.

So again, thanks for sharing!
Fred (happy now)
