I have a computer that caught a virus. It seems to have infected the MBR.
Are there any freeware tools for fixing this.

Thanks in advance,

Dave H.

Sorry, I should have added that the system is running Windows ME. A dos
program would do the trick.

Been thinking of mbr , remembered there can be other problems .

You would be best trying the online virus tools to make sure you are
clean .

1st step , run a virus check from 1 or all of these .

The dangers of using FDISK/MBR to remove partition sector viruses

http://www.geocities.com/~budallen/virus2.html#The Dangers of Using FDISK/MBR to Remove Partition

(iv) How can I remove a virus from my hard disk's partition sector?
http://www.claws-and-paws.com/virus/faqs/alt.comp.virus-2.html
--------------------------------------------------------------

There are two main alternatives: run an anti-virus product, or use
FDISK /MBR.

Most effective anti-virus products will be able to remove a virus from
a partition sector, but some have difficulties under certain
circumstances. In these cases the user may decide to use FDISK /MBR.

Unless you know precisely what you are doing this is unwise. You may
lose access to the data on your hard disk if the infection was done by
a virus such as Monkey or OneHalf. Part 4, section 14 of this FAQ
contains details as to how losing data might happen.

Thanks in advance,

Do a minimal boot from the ME disk, and at the command prompt, type"

"fdisk /mbr" (no quotes)

That will refresh the MBR just like new.
