I have a fairly old 120GB Maxtor drive that has had some failures and now I
am reformatting it. All data is safe.
Using DOS Format, it informs me that both MBRs are unreadable when I try to
format a single partition for the entire drive. Even using quick format
from DOS or through Disk Management, it claims to be unable to complete the
format.
BUT, if I divide the drive into multiple partitions, the quick formats work
just fine.
So, I am figuring that it may be a problem I can fix with something like
FIXMBR, but I don't want to try the Recovery Console. Is there any other
tool I can use to re-write the MBR, or to totally de-initialize the hard
drive so XP has to start all over again with it?
Thanks in advance,
Martin
