yesterday I upgraded my PC with another 1GB of RAM and when I started it up
after the installation, my Norton Internet Security 2007 said it had to be
removed and reinstalled! so I removed it and now when I click on the
downloaded file i still had, it gives an error or it reboots! And when I do
Windows update it also reboots! The PC is fast now, the RAM works perfect,
but I lost my antivirus protection and windows update! whenever i try to
reinstall that stuff, my PC reboots! How can I fix this?????

I wouldn't say the RAM works perfectly. Obviously if you are having
BSODs/abrupt reboots that's cause for concern. Are you certain the
memory is speed matched and uses identical voltages ? There are all
kinds of checks for memory ( BIOS timings, Dual-Channel mode )
that might factor into it a little - but it's likely that the two RAM sticks
have some subtle difference that is causing the faults.

That's a new one even for Symantec, adding memory forces the user
reinstall the software. NIS is a non-stop pain to deal with, You'll never
have a stable/fast computer while NIS is installed.

Yes, both the original and the addition are PC2100 DDR RAM sticks. I have 2
RAM slots on my motherboard so I had 2x 256MB RAM in there. I had to remove 1
of them in order to get the 1024MB stick in there. now I have 1.25 GB of RAM.
Would it matter which of the 2 sticks I removed? (Originally my PC came with
1x 256MB, so this time I chose to take the original stick out, not the other
one which I added previously already). I have never had any issues with
NIS2007 before; it is also installed on this laptop and it works great. Is it
just a coincidence that NIS2007 happened to mess up right after I installed
my RAM? I wouldnt really look forward to take the 1GB back out and put the
old one back in because what would happen then??:(

Most times, and this isn't a "Hard-&-Fast" rule but you should install
the largest size module closest to the CPU in Slot 1 or A. I would
just install/use the single 1.0 Gigabyte module.

If NIS works for you count your lucky stars, not everybody is so
fortunate. One thing you'll never realize is how fast the PC can run
if it's 100% Norton Home product free.

Try it with just the new RAM, with just the old RAM and then again with
both. It could be a mismatch between the different RAM, even if they are
from the same manufacturer, which you didn't specify. You could also run
several of these memory diagnostic utilities. They run from a bootable
floppy or CD. A memory test should be run for some time, 24 hrs or so, not
just a single pass.

Memtest86+

Windows Memory Diagnostic

I second R. McCarty's suggestion about getting rid of NIS. There are other,
less resource intensive, and less problematic programs that do the same job,
and some are even free.

get a copy of memtest86+, put it on a floppy (or get the bootable cd
version), and boot-into and run that utility to verify that the RAM is
fine. Let it run for at least an hour (2 full passes minimum). There
should be ZERO errors - anything else means there's a problem.

Hopefully, you didn't manage to corrupt anything too valuable on the HD
while bad ram was installed.

I did install the new (largest) module in slot 1. so if you were me, you
would also remove the 256MB module in slot 2? My desktop specs are: 2003
Emachines C2280 AMD Athlon, 1.79GHz, WinXP Home SP2... when I do windows
update now, it reboots too...! What antivirus program do you use?

Apparently the RAM does not work perfect, if the system reboots when the RAM
is installed and certain tasks are performed.

Unheralded reboots are a common symptom of memory failure or
incompatibility.

I opened up my CPU and found something stupid. the RAM stick I inserted a
couple years back as an upgrade happened to be a PC2700 instead of PC2100..
so I replaced this PC2700 stick with the original PC2100 256MB.. now it
doesnt reboot all the time but I find it weird that my PC worked all these
years perfectly with a 256MB PC2100 and a PC2700 256 stick!

NIS has always been a problem. Dont ever use it in the future.

You can ask elsewhere. Your question is HARDWARE based and has
absolutely NOTHING to do with the OS.

Bye.

That's not unusual at all, the PC2700 stick would just run at the slower
speed of the PC2100.
