Hello.
Been about a year since I have been able to read up on this
group so I am a little lost on what is good and isn't. I plan on
getting a newer MB-CPU-RAM for my computer.

At the moment I have
AMD Athlon 900
768 RAM
ATI Radeon 9500 Pro
I have 5 HD
Large ATX Tower case

I am looking to spend $200-400. Maybe more if needed.

I use my computer for heavy CPU intensive programs. Mainly encoding of
music and movies, but also play some intensive gaming when time
permits. But I also have alot of programs running as well in
background. So any ideas on a well rounded CPU-MB-RAM? I plan on
getting another case for the older system. So any ideas on a good
simple case that would be networked (or would a crossover be better?)
would also be nice.

PS
Was wondering about a few other things as well. OT but will ask
anyways.

Once I have the two computers up and running is there anyway that I
can run most of my background apps on the slower computer but see them
running like they were on my main computer? So in other words my Email
filter program, Trillian, Firewall, ..... You get the picture-- But
the icons appear in system tray like usual.

Really depends on the prices and availably of parts in your region.

Theres already a thread on it . If you want to go the cheapest route
you cant beat getting the 2500 barton and overclocking it to 3200 -
super easy OC. Ive seen a few who couldnt do it but most seem to
easily do it and I bought one and am running it now.

Asus a7n8x deluxe rev 2.0 with barton 2500@3200.
Im using cheap memory too - Kingston value mem 512 stock 3200
AND a Kbyte stick of 512 - dual channel mem.

I even tried two sticks of Crucial 2100 (256) and OCed it to 3200 and
had no problems on the same board.

They have a newer board A7n8x-E or something now.
The Abit nf7 is supposedly good too.

THere are tons of nforce 2 ultra boards out now for really cheap too.
The biostar and shuttle boards are as low as $50-60 here.

The nforce boards are supposed to be better than the VIA counterparts
but Ive seen good reviews on the VIA too.

I use my computer for heavy CPU intensive programs. Mainly encoding of
music and movies, but also play some intensive gaming when time

3200 does make a noticeable difference - I was using a 1700 before.
It makes a noticeable difference in comrpession and decompressing
stuff - which you do with WINRARs and APE and video conversions -
using stuff like TMGEnc etc.

I have no experience but getting the new 64 bit AMD would probably be
even better from the impression I get.

We covered it in a thread here. Lots of changes in the air - PCI
express over AGP, BTX over ATX, new video chips and cards ( saw a
a thng on the 6800 nvidia which they claimed twice the speed or
something) and 64 bit 939 socket.

If you get one now theres only the 940 fx socket high end and 754
cheaper socket which would be in your price range at least in the US.

Out of the 754 chipsets here youll see lots of VIA based boards lower
than 100 and nforce3 150 starting from $120 and the newer nforce3 250
from $180.

The CPUs are around 190-23- for a 2800-3000 64 bit.

Seems like it would be faster at stuff like the stuff above but I
havent seen any hard numbers on it.

The much anticipated 939 socket is coming out but the prices probably
will be too high until the Xmas season - supposedly itll be released
very soon but your choice would still probably be between the older
2500 barton oced to 3200 - a 754 socket.

You buy a cheaper nforce2 ultra board and 2500 barton oced to 3200 and
DDR 400 mem now - which would make a difference and make do until say
Xmas when a lot of changes may occur - cheap 939 socket chips and
motherboards with possibly PCI express and even BTX ?

Or you can spend about twice more and get the 754 socket cheaper via
or nforce2 150 board and 2800 or 3000 CPU and some 400 DDR.

Youll be locked into the socket 754 but there will be more CPUs
released according to articles so you can upgrade the CPU eventhough
the focus maybe on the newer 939 socket boards and chips and you wont
have PCI express and BTX if they do catch on by xmas.
