I'm getting used to powerpoint, sorta, but before I climb much higher on
this learning curve, I gotta kinda wonder if there are any other
presentation software packages out there? I looked thru tucows.com, asked
a friend, but no one package stands out, as a viable alternative to PP.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

The easy answer is, 'Yes there are other presentation applications out
there.'

But the real question, at least so we can provide some additional
information, is 'What do you need to accomplish? Are your presentations
havens of multimedia - slideshows of photos - e-learning presentations with
data input - used on a 40' screen for corporate events - distributed on
CDROM - need to be cross platform capable - or...'

There are a few areas PowerPoint can be improved, but as the industry
standard it does have some of the best support and wide range of support
applications that allow it to conform to almost any need. Post back with
some detailed needs and I'm sure you will get some great feedback.

Dan,

It guess it all depends on what you want to 'present'

Everything has a learning curve. Powerpoint's learning curve is not that high to get started.

If you think of PowerPoint as a tool limited only by your creativity, you
will always find yourself climbing higher on your learning curve, but always
faced with the challenge of discovering new ways of using the tool. With a
hammer anyone can learn to bang nails. With use and skill you can build
beautiful houses. The only time I would trade hammers is when I see someone
else building bigger and better houses.

Fair question!

I'm making slide shows, some with music, none with video. One to 6
photos per slide. These are for the use of friends and family, as
well as a local canoe club. Want to do something classier than
ofoto.com. These will mostly be run on Windows machines. It would be
nice if I could keep the files small enough to email to people with
dial up connections, without making thier phone lines start to smoke.

Several folks have complained they don't have viewers to handle .pps
files. (I know, easy for them to fix that, but they don't want to add
apps.) So the last two times, I've made html files from the .ppt, and
uploaded to a web page. One of the things I will need to learn more
about- not real happy with the resulting web pages. But I don't want
to spend a lot of time re-writing the whole darn thing using an html
specific editor.

Someone pointed me to openoffice.org, I see that pressentation
software offers output to flash .swf format. Sounds great! I will
try that package- hey, the price is right.

I'm Mr. Mom, for another year or two, I just need something to keep my
mind active, too much Barney and Sesame St. ya understand. But price
is important- Mr. Mom don't get no pay check no more.

Any other software suggestions? I have great hopes for
openoffice.org/ Impress. But I'm still looking.

Hey- nice newsgroup y'all got here. Kudos to the participants.

Thanks!
