Just had another go out. This 160 gig was a1.5 years old. Out of warrantee.
Seagate has a 5 year garantee. I've bought 3 already for clients in the last
year and haven't had any problems with them.

Five years aint bad. My last 2 WD drives only lasted 18 months and they
wern't run hot.

Maxtor has a good reputation and their drives work just great. Take the
Seagate shill crap elsewhere.

This cretin, for those that dont realise it, ran the same line
about the IBM 75GXP drives. IBM has just settled a class
action suit, so even IBM realises what duds they were.

I prefer Samsungs myself, tho one I know of has died, and
they have a 3 year warranty, not as good as Seagate there.

Much quieter and run cooler than Seagates tho and thats why I prefer them.

No problems here. Maybe you've abused them.

I don't know why peoples drives die. I have never had one that has
dired ???

maybe they abuse them and or not good cooling ????

Maxtor does suck.

same thing here. Bought a brand new computer in March 2004 after last one
died from a malignant worm or something.

Couldn't get the hard drive to function after the worm infection, but was
able to salvage the contents of the drive.

The new computer came with a 40G "Maxtor" HD, loaded with my data. Great,
right?

wrong.

here I am today, a year and a few months, and the drive is
DEAD...irretrievable. Everything LOST.

And of course it's out of warranty. So I called Maxtor...not hoping for a
replacement or a "free recovery" or anything like that. I thought maybe
they'd have a policy by which dead drives could be sent back for
evaluation....and possibly, at best, a partial refund or coupon toward
future purchases if it was found that the drive simply "conked out".

What was I told?

"Oh we don't want or need the drive back..and there's nothing we can
do...sorry..."

pathetic, imo.

Horrid. years of data and work gone. Money down the drain for the purchase
and the attempt to repair it...and Maxtor doesn't even want thte drive back.

what a pile of sh$% company, imo.

There are data recovery companies, OnTrack for instance used to be one,
who will take your drive apart and try to pull the data off the
platters. It may be expensive, but may be worth it depending on the
situation.

You know what....you are right. I forgot we used them for one of the bases
(home plate in fact!) for a softball game in May. What a dummy I am.....I
didn't know that wasn't covered under warrantee.

Oh, AND I forgot,,,I got into a fight with my hard drive. It wouldn't listen
so I smacked it around. The drive finally got the point. The neighbors
called DPS (Drive Protective Services ) and I almost got locked up.
Man, thanks for the intelligent post!!
