i bought this card yesterday as a solution to adding a 3rd hard drive. it
has one ide and two sata. however, when i installed it the motherboard on
boot up did not sound a self-test complete. i let the computer on for some
time and still no self-test complete sound. the computer simply refused to
boot up with this card in the pci slot. however, when i took it out, the
computer booted with no problem. i am wondering if this is because of a
defective card, and i should take it back to the store for exchange, or
maybe my motherboard cannot accept such a card? i have no previous
experince with an ata controller, so i don't really know what could be
wrong. the card was recommended to me by the technical person at the
store. he said he has had this card in his computer for awhile with great
result. any help are appreciated.

Sounds like you bought locally so take advantage of that and get another
card. You may have a defective card, only way to tell is to get another. A
strange incompatibility wouldn't be unheard of, but try a new card first.
Also, blow out the slots with canned air and also try another slot if
available.
