Has anyone any experience of these drives?

I was all set to buy one until I read somewhere that you need to install a
driver to make them actually work.

Is this the case does anyone know?

I only want it for backup so can install the driver, this is not a problem,
but would rather it not need it in case I want to hop from machine to
machine at any time.

I'd imagine it needs a driver because it is "One touch", an
additional feature over any other, typical removable drive.
Any drive would need a driver for Win9x though. Getting
another drive instead would be similar situation, if you
want to have a "one touch" type of feature it's going to
need a specific driver to support that.

Otherwise, there's no reason to choose these higher priced
alternatives, just buy a drive enclosure from Newegg and any
drive you want... for example buy yourself a WD Raptor and
put your system's current drive in the enclosure.

I'm not especially after the one-touch feature, this would have been a
bonus. Th edrive was the cheapest for what it is was the main reason for my
choice.

Are these one-touch drives likely to work as plug-and-play drives without a
driver if I didn't want to use the one-touch feature?

TYpically a removable drive connected to Win2K, XP and
(maybe ME?) will work with the OS driver, so far as basic
typical read/write features.

Not having a Maxtor One-Touch I can't guarantee it will be
plug-n-play but that does appear to be the case, including
some notes i've read that it can be used in Linux or with a
server, just not being able to use the backup (one-touch)
program in these different environments.

I've had one of the 120 gig drives for several months. You do not need
to install any sw to make it work but if you want to use the one touch
back-up feature then you need to install the Retrospect SW that comes
with the drive. I've only used the usb, since mine does not have
firewire but I suspect it's the same thing in terms of drivers.

There's also the OneTouch Utility, which has a function on it
that spins down the drive and parks the heads after a set
period of inactivity (which can be changed in the program
options itself). It also allows the front panel button to
be associated with any utility of your choice, not just Dantz
Retrospect Express (which IIRC is a trial version).

Assuming you are talking about WinBlows, my W98FE installation has
just such an ability built in, under (I believe) power management.
I can set the time to spin down from about 3 minutes to 5 hours (or
never) for each drive. The same area controls idle blanking time
on the CRT. To restore everything takes two taps of the ALT key,
or any rodential disturbance.

After about 10 minutes on this system, when all the power savers
chip in, power consumption drops from about 95 watts to 45 watts.
This is independently measured at the power meter.
