Hi,

I'm am planning to replace the hard drive in my pc with a larger one.
The old drive is a 120 gb ATA drive which I want to put in an external
casing with USB 2.0 connection and use for backup.

The simples way is ofcourse to by an external case and a new hard
drive...

But I can get my hands on a Maxtor OneTouch II - 300gb external drive
at a VERY resonable price.

This leads me to my question. Can I replace the drive in the Onetouch
with my old drive, and put the 300 gb drive in the Onetouch II in my
pc?

The way I see it there could be 2 issues: Either that the Onetouch
drive have some special bios/bootsector of some kind that prevents me
from putting the old drive in the case. Or the Onetouch uses the S-ATA
interface, in which case I wont be able to use it either.

Neither Maxtor's website nor google has provided me with an answer on
this so I'm hoping for some help here.

Anyone?...

Regards,

Christian

Third issue: The cooling of the one-touch might be inadequate
for your drive. Rumour has it that it is barely enough for
the drive Maxtor uses, and that is a 5400rpm model.

Other than that, I don't see why Maxtor should prevent you
from changing the drive. It is not really that cheap compared to
the bare drive plus an other enclosure of you choice.

I have a Maxtor 80GB FW external and recently tried to put a newer
160GB drive in it. The new drive wouldn't even spin up, though it
works fine in a generic USB enclosure. My guess is the new drive's
power requirements are too much for the little internal supply.

The only way to find out is to try.
