I attempted to install a Maxtor One-Touch III USB external drive on a
Dell 9150 with Pentium D and Windows XP Home. All updates. After a
minute or two with the drive powered on, I got a system failure
showing page_fault_in_nonpaged_area. I contacted Maxtor support and
they suggested deleting all the USB drivers and letting Windows
reinstall them. I did, but the only change now was that the system
error reads IRQL_not_less_or_equal.
In attempting to isolate the problem, I took an older Maxtor One-Touch
I drive from my Dell 4150 with Pendium 4 and Windows XP Pro. The
older Maxtor runs perfectly on the Dell 9150 (It was there
previously.) I immediately assumed there was something wrong with the
USB interface in the Maxtor III. However, when I intalled it on the
Dell 4550 it runs fine!!!! Any ideas?
It may have nothing to do with this problem, but I also attempted to
upgrade the XP Home in the 9150 with XP Pro. I get another type of
system failure when Windows first starts to load in the installation
process. The error relates to the pci.sys file.
