Hi, please, please can someone help. My Maxtor 250 gig drive is not recognized by my PC or any PC i try it on for that matter. It is not picked up on My Computer or Disk Management. It is picked up on Device Manager only. It says there is 0 used space, but that is not true as 100 gigs has been used up. Please let me know what to do as this has my life on it.

Sorry if this post has been repeated, but i have searched the forums and nothing has helped so far.

Thanks

Hdd?

When did the problem first happen?
Had you installed anything recently on it?
Have you tried a new cable in case the one you are using is damaged/faulty?
Have you changed the jumper settings?
Presume it's an internal drive??

It started about a week ago when some of the data could not be recognised, or appeared corrupt. I would turn the drive off and turn it back on again and it would work. Over the course of the week however, it got worse and now the drive is not even recognised, however, sometimes when it does appear it says Local Disk (rather than Maxtor blah blah) and has no data on it. I have tried with all new leads, still does not work. It is an external drive.

Thanks for your help

Sorry, not sure what Jumper settings mean? im kinds new to computers. And yeah, music, movies have been downloaded onto the maxtor.

The jumpers would only apply to an internal HD which you can set it to be eather a master or a slave drive.

Anyhoo if it's purley used for a data dumping area and no OS is nstalled on it I'm not entirely sure what can be done.
The fact that you say you were haviing problems with data corruption SHOUTS out that it is a bit fubbared.
I'm sure somebody will suggest some sort of scanning software but I've not used any before.

Sorry I hope you get it sorted.

Cheers,

Rich

if the drive has finished which sucks as its less than 6 months old, can the data still be recovered?

Possibly. There are companys which offer file recovery services. For a fee ;)

Is it a firewire or a USB 1.0/2.0 drive?
What version of Windows have you got?

It could be a driver issue.

Its a USB 2.0 and i use XP. I have tried updating drivers and just get the message "no better drivers could be found".

Sorry but I'm not sure what else to suggest. :o
Perhaps somebody will come along with some other suggestions.

Cheers,

Rich

usb?

See if using a different USB lead helps.
See if it works on a different USB port or on another PC.
