Maxtor HDD problem

I recently had to reinstall windows XP on a Gateway M275. Previous to this
reinstallation I've been using a Maxtor 3200 external hard drive to back up
my critical files. Since the reinstall I am unable to access the Maxtor. It
is showing up without errors in device manager. When I click on the drive
letter, in my computer, I get a popup window saying that the drive is not
formatted. Do I want to format? I click on NO because the drive should
contain my backup data. Any suggestions?

What type of "reinstall" did you do, full or repair?
Did you disconnect the external drive from the PC before reinstalling and then
reconnect it after reinstallation? WinXP should recognize the drive and install
drivers for it. If not:
Have you tried to reinstall the firmware/drivers/software using the supplied CD or
from the manufacturers support site for the external drive/enclosure?
Have you followed the manufacturers T-Shooting for the drive?

Could be that you need to take ownership of the drive. It might have old
permissions on it from your previous install. Here's a page that explains
it.

Thanks for the quick response and suggestions.

I had to format my hard drive (internal one) and do a full reinstall of
windows xp. At first I was not worried because I thought that backing up my
data on the external drive would be easy to retrieve. The external drive was
not connected when I reinstalled windows. No software came with the
drive...just plugged it in and it worked out of the box. I've been using it
for several months without any problems.

The tech support has been less than satisfactory from seagate. The first
tech guy kept telling me to just format the drive then i could use it. I
could not seem to get him to understand that my backup information is on that
drive...i pretty much need that data for work/school. A second tech guy has
offered some solutions, none of which have panned out. I'm waiting to hear
back from him, but he has already suggested that I pay for the recovery
services at seagate. I'm not yet sure I want to format the drive and pay
seagate to recover the data.

Hopefully something will end up working.

Thanks again.

And another timely reply...thank you.

I tried to take ownership of the drive. I right click on the drive, click
on properties, and get the properties popup window. Options are General,
AutoPlay, Tools, and Hardware. The General tab is showing 0 bytes used space
and 0 btes free space. File system RAW. Tools options don't seem to do
anything. I tried to do error checking and defraging. nada. Under the
Hardware tab i tried properties after selecting the Maxtor drive. a new
popup window showing tabs: general, policies, volumes, and driver. Under
general the driver status is showing as working properly. Under policies it
is optimized for quick removal. Nothing on volumes, there is a Populate
button available.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Worked/installed as stated on their support site.

In Device Manager > Disk Drives > the External Drive Properties > Driver tab >
Driver Details button, what if any driver files are listed?
If USB interface, in Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers, is the
External Drive listed? If yes, what if any drivers are listed as installed?

Was the External Drive a shared network drive?
What application/utility did you use to backup to the External Drive?
You don't want to format the drive and then pay for data recovery services that
will unlikely recover 75% of the data let alone 100%.

Can you remove the External Drive from the housing it's in? If yes, remove it and
connect it to an open connector (if available) in the PC to see if you can access the
data if it's still present.

Is this XP home? If so you will have to bootup in safe mode to see the
security tab.

In Device Manager > Disk Drives > the External Drive Properties > Driver tab >
Driver Details button

Driver files:
C:\\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\disk.sys
C:\\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\PartMgr.sys

Universal Serial Bus Controllers:
(I'm showing ten entries, two of which are USB Mass Storage Device)

The external drive was not a shared network drive. I was unable to use
windows backup utility, so I simply copied my files onto the hard drive.
[sinking suspicion that this was a mistake].

I don't know if I can remove the external drive from it's housing. I'll try
this weekend when I have time and other solutions are not working. I'm not
sure if I have an open connector in laptop to try this out.

Check the drive with either, both of the utilities linked below or any other
utility to see if it still actually contains any data or not.
Both should be run from a floppy disk which need to be created,
info/instructs/manuals on site pages. When booting up with a BING floppy, select
Cancel to boot to the DOS drive/partition utility, otherwise it will be installed on
your machine.

In this case you have to take the help of data recovery software to
recover your data from inaccessible hard drive. Stellar Phoenix
Windows Data Recovery Software a powerful tool which recovers data
from inaccessible or formatted hard drive.
Download the demo version from: http://www.stellarinfo.com/partition-recovery.htm
If the demo shows the preview of the recovered data then get the full
version to save it.

Assuming English is not your first language, are you asking
"how do I repair a Seagate or Maxtor hard drive with the vendor Software?"
The answer to this to download their software from
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/
See also their instructions page.
Mostly the software will identify disk faults, but does not do much for repair.

If English is your first language, we have no idea what you are asking
Time to go back to school.
