When doing fresh install on this drive, the windows setup sees 131g, not
200. I did install the SATA driver when asked at the start of the setup. Any
reason why this would happen?

The BIOS of your motherboard will need to support 48-bit LBA. If you have
SATA connectors, that's a done deal. The OS will need to support it as
well. This means Windows 2000 SP3 or Windows XP SP1.
You can make a small change to the Windows regisrtry using this tool from
Maxtor.

Also, verify your version of atapi.sys, as directed here:

In addition to the comments by S.Heenan, a 200GB drive will show as
~186, since drive makers use 1K = 1000, and computers usually show 1K =
1024. Also the earlier version of fdisk has a problem with drives over
~64G. Make sure you have the latest version.

Windows XP only recognizes up to 137 GB harddrives. You need to install SP1
to recognize larger sizes.

Thats my issue Dave, my XP version will only have the Service Pack 1
installed after I put in XP, then do the updates, will it see the full drive
then?

Could I not get SP1a from a site, just download the entire file to my hard
drive, then find the SATA driver from there?

If you want the XP installation program to see more than 137GB,
slipstream the contents of i386 from the Windows XP CD with SP1 and
burn a new CD.

Maybe also tell him what "slipstream" means.
