Has anyone ever had problems using the Maxblast software that comes with the
Maxtor hard drive? I bought a 30 GB. Maxtor hard drive for a new computer. It
came with a cd that you can use to boot the computer if you're installing the
hard drive in a new system. Anyway, I put the cd in and everything comes up
like it should. It identifies the hard drive and says "This hard drive has not
been prepared for use on this system. Would you like to do so?" I click yes
and then it goes through all the stuff about creating partitions. It then
formats the partitions and asks me to insert my Windows system disk so it can
copy over the system files. It copies them and then asks me to insert the
Windows installation cd so it can install the operating system. I put the
Windows disk in the cd-rom drive and start the setup program. It starts the
setup program but comes back with an error message saying that it can't
complete setup because it can't find any partitions to copy to. So I start
over from scratch. I boot from the Maxtor cd and it identifies the hard drive
and then it says "This hard drive has not been prepared for use on this system.
Would you like to do so?" I tried using the Maxtor disk three times. Each
time, after saying it created the partitions and formatted them it would come
up with an error saying there weren't any partitions created. Finally I got
fed up and used a Windows boot floppy and used the fdisk and format commands
from it instead.

That sound almost exactly like my experiences with 30GB Maxtor drives and
Maxblast software. I kept thinking it was the drive and took it back.
After two more drives I decided the software was the problem and used fdisk
and format in a Win98SE system. Anyway, I'll not use Maxtor drives again
although I have to say the drive has continued to work just fine.

There is nothing wrong with Maxtor Drives, I have been using them for
quite some time. It's a software problem with MaxBlast. Just use a
windows 98 Startup disk to partition and format the drive and then
install your OS.

Maxblast is not necessary anyway. The complexity in "preparing" the HD is
overblown. If you're installing XP, heck, it partitions and formats for
you! If using Win98, as somone else said, FDISK and format are all you need.
No big deal. Or do as I do, partition and format w/ BootIt NG (
http://www.bootitng.com ). Just DL, create floppy, boot it, skip Welcome
screen w/ Cancel (to abort install), then follow prompts to main menu, and
enter Partition Work. Now create your partition(s), format, etc., and
reboot to OS installation CD.
