Maxtor

Having had crashes in the past, I was happy to see a site go up taking
a survey of Maxtor hard drive failures.

They will contact you with the final results if you provide contact
info. It might be interesting to see how many had issues with warranty
replacements.

The website is at http://www.maxtorsurvey.envy.nu/

Gday
I have a troble with my Maxtor 80GB External Hard Drive. When I restart my
PC it freezes, Whats going on, What do I do?????????
Reply soon Thanks!!!!!!!

If you mean that the PC won't boot with the External USB drive
connected, go into the BIOS and chang the Boot order so that USB is not
listed.

Interesting - Thanks. I've serviced an unusual run of Maxtor drive failures
over the last few months. I've started to wonder if there is a particular
problem with these, especially those manufactured about 2.5 to 3 years ago.
Would be interested to know if others have had similar experience.

If these are the "super slim" drives, yes. I've had 3 or 4 fail, some
right out of the box. The retailer where I bought them (white box) said
they also had a big rate of return. I've seen more failures of these
particular model drives on clients' machines, too. There was a real
spate of these "super slim" drive failures a while ago - maybe not as
long ago as 3 years but some time after the Great Fujitsu Drive
Failure.

I replaced a lot of those on warranty as well. Most of the bad ones failed
well within the warranty. The ones that didn't fail within the first few
months seem to be still running ok.

Thanks for the info.

Kerry,

Which drives are considered to be reliable then? I am about to build my
system soon and so I will inevitably need a good reliable HD for it.

Regards,

I replaced more hard drives in the month of August of this year than in the
previous 8 years in this location. They were from every manufacturer, every
form factor, and a huge range of ages from ancient to almost new. I lost 2
of my own drives as well.

Not only that, I heard from other people about hard drives failing right and
left. A local TV station lost 5 drives in a few days. Two friends had laptop
drives die under warranty.

And I haven't replaced a single bad hard drive yet this month. Nada Zip.
Zilch.

(cue Twilight Zone music)

Whatever it was, it was weird. At first, I suspected heat, but people have
air conditioning. Maybe we were getting bad power or something, but you'd
think I'd be changing power supplies and/or other components. But no, it was
just bad hard drives.

All of the manufacturers have bad batches of drives from time to time. I
have not found that any manufacturer has a better record than others over a
period of years.

I currently use Samsung and Maxtor drives. The only reason I use them over
other brands is that the distributor I buy from will replace them no
questions asked during the warranty period. This allows me to offer my
customers better service. Look for a store that will replace a drive if it
is on warranty. Otherwise you will have to deal directly with the
manufacturer which can take weeks to receive a replacement.

Make sure that the option to boot from a USB or external drive is disabled
in the BIOS. If this doesn't help then you will have to disconnect the
external drive until the system is booted up. Some motherboards won't boot
if there are any USB drives hooked up. This includes external hard drives,
memory card readers, or printers with card readers. The only option is to
disconnect the drive or remove any cards from the reader.
