Folks
I have a Maxtor 250g fire wire external drive that is recognized by vista
and allows for file transfers etc no problems. The problem I have is when I
have finished say doing a backup or other activity to the drive and wish to
remove it from the system, it will not "remove" itself and when using the
safely remove hardware it just sits there saying some program is using it so
it cannot shutdown. Task manager will show that nothing is operating. Any
suggestions?

If I attempt to shut the whole system down it just hangs.

regards

Don

Try closing all Explorer windows, then open a new one to view the drive,
refresh it, then close the Explorer window. See if it will eject then. If
not, check to make sure that it is set to be optimized for quick removal -
run the Disk Management tool, right-click the removable drive, click
Properties, then the Policies tab, and finally select the option to optimize
for quick removal.

finally found a solution. I had a usb card reader attached to the system
and that has to be "removed" first to enable the hard drive to be removed.
Thanks for your efforts

That's odd, but if it works then I'm glad you figured it out.
