Maxtor External 120 Gig One Touch Failure

I have a 120 gig external maxtor drive (USB connector) that has failed.
I get a generic I/O error when I try accessing data on the drive. The
OS (XP) can see the drive but thats about it. Chdks gives me a generic
I/O error. Also, the OS seems to be busy trying to access the disk
which makes running programs very difficult (since its busy). No
strange noises. I am thinking the FAT table or some early section of
the disk now contains bad sectors or something.

I've tried Norton and someone tried partition magic without luck at
getting at the data. Of course, I need the data back (regardless of
cost). I wanted to know what my best options are? If someone has any
experience with a good recovery house let me know. Here are some
options I am considering :

1 - Slide drive out of external case and hook up to my IDE channel and
run Maxtor's powermax utility.

2 - Download R-Studio and On recovery and see if they can read the
drive data.

3 - Just send it in to a reputable data recovery house and pay the big
bucks.

Can someone recommend an approach?

Thanks,
Pat

If that really is true, regardless of cost, the only viable
approach is to use a professional recovery service.

Anything else risks the data more.

Use a pro recovery service.

Pat,

There are class action suits against Maxtor - as I believe - regarding
OneTouch and overheating drives.

I may be in the UK, but I have a 100% success rate with OneTouch drives.

Some members of this newsgroup will take offence at my post - just
ignore them.

If I go the pro recovery service route, there are lots to choose from.
Can someone recommend a reputable company that could give me my best
shot at recovery?

Thanks

Pat, If you decide to go with a recovery service, I've had a positive
experience with Nationwide Data Recovery in Miami. Just fedex them your
drive together with a new blank drive of equivalent size. They'll
recover and ghost over your data for $100-$500 (depending on the
difficulty) with no charge if data is not recovered.

Thanks, odiferous one, for taking that off our hands.
Who better to do that job than a troll himself.

Would we have done that, poster might have ignored it for being professio-
nal envy, but now he'll probably google-up your posts and find out that you
are just an unprofessional troll that can't even manage a simple drive clone.

Gosh, Duncan 'smelly' Clarke, you're soo smart that it's frightning.

Hi, Folkret,

Having a good day?

Always a pleasure to read your posts. Makes me feel really, really good
about myself, knowing that however poorly I'm feeling, there's always
someone worse-off than I am. I sympathise - really.

But smelly? OK, so I don't always smell of roses (I adore garlic), but
where'd you get it from that I'm smelly? "Colostomy" doesn't
necessarily mean "smelly" - but then I suppose you are (from the gist of
your posts) very narrow-minded.
