I have a 80gb Maxtor drive that was purchased new in April of this year and
it appears to have gone south. This is not a high use machine nor is there
any heat issue. I get a hard drive failure message upon boot-up. Are there
any diagnostic tools available that I can use before I pull this drive out
and send it back to Newegg for a replacement drive?

In addition, what steps will I need to go through with Microsoft, if/when I
reload Windows XP Home. Will Microsoft think I'm installing this on a new PC
when I go to activate the PC after reloading everything?

Go here and downlaod PowerMax from Maxtor. It has a diagnostic program that
will give you an error number that you give to Maxtor for an RMA number.
From my past expierience, I had a bad drive, ran the diagnostic program,
Called Maxtor and they had a new drive delivered to my home within 2 days.
