I've got a Maxtor d540x-4k that I've been using for the past year or
so. The other day it just stopped working. When starting up my
computer I'm getting an error about a disk failure and asks for a
bootable disk. The hard drive itself sounds like someone took a
ping pong ball and dropped it in a glass. It does this twice and
never really spins up.

What I neeed to know is, is there a way to diagnose and/or fix this
problem or am I SOL? I'd appreciate any help or insight.

I've just done that, she's dead, Jim.

That noise is the drive recalibrating when
it cant read the platters at drive init time.

You might be able to replace the logic
card with one from and identical drive.
or am I SOL?

Yep, very likely.

If the data is important, don't mess with it, don't power it up and
give it to a professional data recovvery company for recovery.

Otherwise thing thing is dead.
