I have a new 80gb/8mb cache maxtor drive
thats seems to be falling asleep after 10-15 min
of inactivity in windows(98se) or dos. the bios fails to
pickup the drive after a warm boot, but always does after a
cold boot.

It formats w/no problems, installs 98se..downloads win-update
patches and runs fine for hours..so long as you dont walk away
from the pc for longer than 10-20min..and give the drive a
chance to run idle. i tried this w/an aopen ax59pro, ax6bc,
asus k7m and asus a7v266-e, all the same result..the diag software
says its good. power managment was disabled on all systems,
bios's flashed to current, -and two verified 80wire cables..

i'm feeling it has a controller issue of some sort..

any thoughts?

Its more likely to have that sleep specified in the drive itself.

Just reset that using the Hitachi/IBM Feature
Tool and see if it still behaves like that.

do you mean this tool: Ftool_v180.exe

also, reset how? change the dma modes? the write cache?

This is the feature list on the tool, pasted from:

http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#FeatureTool

Enable or disable the read-ahead or write cache.
Change the drive Automatic Acoustic Management settings to the:
Lowest acoustic emanation setting (Quiet Seek Mode), or
Maximum performance level (Normal Seek Mode).
Change the predefined capacity of the drive. This option can be used
in situations where there is a BIOS limitation and the drive is not
recognized. See the Users Guide for specific details.
Switch the Ultra DMA mode (replaces the IBMATASW utility)
Change Advanced Power Mode - allows you to change between the lowest
power consumption and the highest power consumption (maximum
performance level).
Show Drive Temperature - shows the current drive temperature in
Celsius and Farenheit.

Has anyone else noticed that these drives make, for the lack of a better
description, a "SHEEESH-CLUNK" noise periodically? I've worked with various
brands of drives for ten years, and I've never heard anything like this
before. They also sound like parts are loose inside the drives while
they're seeking.

Over a dozen samples of these drives, many from different lots, make these
noises. I can't find any firmware updates *anywhere*. Finally, Maxtor's
sound utility doesn't seem to be available anymore, and it was definitely
not for these drives anyway.

I have 2 older Maxtor drives that will make the noise. I have also
had tons of problems with them (they are both 90845d4 drives, 8.4gb).
One will start making the noise when I get to 93% in win2k full
format... no matter what I do.
The other was recognized by win2k as a 200gb drive with an 8.4gb
partition.
I have tried doing low level formats and tests... after a certain
number of blocks, they start the clucking noise. I wonder if it is a
sign of failure... Any ideas?

I have two Maxtors - Diamond Plus D740X (primary) Diamond Plus 9 (secondary)
both 7200 rpm.
The primary drive is starting to 'clunk' and the mouse freezes for maybe 5
seconds then 'unlocks'.
I am not sure but feel that this drive is going, going etc.
If a get a third Maxtor, can I do an Xcopy to a third drive (whip out the
secondary, stick in new,
Xcopy across) then swop out the primary for this third drive to become
prime?
Any thoughts, advice, doubtful suggestions welcome.

RoJ

Have a look in the Event Log. Are there any disk timeouts? Are you running
in RAID config?
Tony

Hi Tony,
The Event Viewer shows only one type of disc warning, namely:-
\Device\Harddisk0\D during paging operation ID 51 Source disk.
Needless to say the Microsoft help says nothing known
I also have a True Vector Engine 'time out on debug mutex'
Mouse and ring-buffer overflow ID 12 Subsytem Name
I8042_MOU_BUFFER_OVERFLOW
Any of these applicable?
And NO to Raid config.

Roger,

No. Those errors are not applicable to the proposed cause I had in mind. I
experienced similar symptoms with a RAID array which gave disk seek
timeouts. Mouse freezing, seek noises etc.
Unlikley to be the cause in this case, I think. Sorry.

Well , my Maxtor continues to grunt and freeze the mouse
but a download and run of the Maxtor Powermax drive
testing programme seems more re-assuring than my state
of mind.
Thanks for advice to date - hopefully my drive will
soldier on regardless.

Ha ha... for me, PowerMax is anything but re-assuring!
A passing grade in PowerMax is usually an indication that the drive is
not currently on fire, and nothing more. ;-)
