Here's what shows up on properties of my Maxtor USB.

Driver files: C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\disk.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\drmcdb.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\PartMgr.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\snapman.sys

Good luck.

I just purchased a new computer and tried connecting my Maxtor 3100 t
it and am having the exact same issue. I have 2 other computers and th
drive works perfect. The only difference is that I am using XP Home o
the new computer. I have connected the drive to a desktop running X
Pro w/ USB 2.0 & a laptop running XP Home w/ USB 1.1 with no problems
I get an immediate message that says "USB DEVICE NO RECOGNIZED" when
connect it to the new computer.
The new PC is a HP Pavilion a1034n. Like the other party stated, ther
was no installation disk for the drive, only drivers to download fo
Win98SE on the website. If anyone has any ideas..please let me know!
Thanks

1. You say the only difference is you use XP Home on new comp then you say
you use it on the laptop...........???????????

2. You should not need drivers with XP (any)

3. Just check the USBs are enabled in the BIOS. I very much expect they are
but check anyway.

4. Are you connecting it to a board mounted USB port and not an aux USB
port. Some my USB devices only work on a board mounted port.

IT could just so be that your new comp USBs are faulty. Have you got anyone
that can lend you a memory stick or similar to try in same port. See if that
works.

you could try ExplorerXP

http://www.explorerxp.com/

This works when XP fails to see my USB Mass Storage devices.

how many people are having problems with this HD. the 3100. i think i
is a problem with Media Center editions. It works fine on 2 of m
computers that have home edition. It might be just pro edition
because with media center comes pro edition. I'm also running
computer on Longhorn and it gives me the same error that it ha
"malfunctioned" I wanted to try to load my hard drive on this compute
because it is networked to my other one with pro on it. i made
folder on my computer with pro and was just going to transferthe file
over but nope. this maxtor crap sucks

I've just bought the same Hard Drive, works on my Laptop, not on m
desktop both running XP.

It shows in device manage as being active, it passes when I do a tes
with utility provided from their website.

Doesn't show in explorer!

Did anyone manage to sort this out

Right click MY Computer\Manage\Disk Management.
Has it been given a drive letter ?.
bw..OJ

While in Disk Management, right click the K: drive and assign it a new
drive letter that you're fairly sure isn't in use or hasn't been
assigned before (like L: or M: or N: or...you get the idea). When you
pick a valid one, it should automagically show up in My Computer too.

I had this same issue just today with a Fuji digital camera and a
couple of USB thumb drives on a new Dell computer.

This is where I got that answer from:

Hope this helps.
