ok.

despite what it says about not needing to adjust jumper settings on sata
drives, i adjusted the jumper pin on my 300gb sata maxtor 6v300fo hdd.

it was installed to the right of four pins. i moved it to the two on the
left. on the hdd casing it says : sata 1.5gb mode setting if you select
these two pins. the default setting is 3.0gb (i have no idea what this
means).

as soon as i did this my hdd was detected by bios BUT NOT IN THE IDE FIELD.
IT ONLY SHOWS UP IN THE BOOT CONFIGURATION MENU. it is ami bios.

now, windows recognises it and so does maxblast 4, so i'm uo and running
after 10 hours of research and foul language.

support for these products falls well behind the users needs.

p.s i do not know the significance of 1.5gb or 3.0gb setting, so if anyone
can enlighten us then please do!

First you dont adjust any jumper pins on a SATA drive....2nd,if the SATA drive
isnt detected, download the MAXTOR MS-DOS utility for the hd,download to
a MS DOS formatted floppy, boot to floppy, run the format and/or burn in
utility.
The drive will get recognized after so long as the BIOS is set for SATA,by
default
its not...

1.5 vs 3.0 is the data transfer rate. SATA drives are supposed to be
backwards compatible, but if your motherboard doesn't properly support
the SATA protocols then you can have problems. You may need to update
the motherboard BIOS to correct some deficiency. As with any consumer
item, one should determine the appropriate product PRIOR to purchase, or
contact a professional to perform the installation.
