Maxtor 160gig hard drive

Paul Hepburn

I am trying to install the new Maxtor 160gig hard drive
on my AMD-K6 3D Processor 501MHZ 320MB of Ram with
Windows XP Professional version 2020 service pack 1 and I
am getting the following message (one of the file drivers
installed for the devise is invalid). If some one could
please help me out as I have been trying to fix this for
a few days now.

Thanks Paul Hepburn

Hello

You may want to update your Bios on that systems to be able
to see that larger harddrive, that may be part of your problem
are you sure your Bios will support that drive, find that out first

And your mainboard is? (manufacturer and model if you can, please) Could be
important in this instance.

I am not sure where to find the what the mainboard is. If you can tell me
where to find the manufacturer and model I will give it to you.

Your computer is probably too old to recognize this drive with the
motherboard that would support a K6 500 mHz processor. If the drive came
with a PCI controller card, insert the card and plug the drive into it as
the Primary/Master with the cable that came with the drive. If the drive
did not come with a controller card, and your bios will not support the
drive, you will have to purchase one at a reputable computer supply shop.
Make sure that it will support > 160 GB drive and is ATA 100 or 133 capable.

Hello

Am asking you will your system Bios see that drive, I think you
need to do 1 or 2 things,
1. Replace your mother brd
2. Update Bios by looking for the maker of your mother brd ok

It did come with the ATA133 card and sees the drive, but when you try to
install the drivers you get the following message from xp (one of the file
drivers
installed for the devise is invalid)

Would this be my mother board. CP-AMD-K611-500 (AMD K611 500MHZ CPU (7D))
CP-MIT-TBD/DUR MB-ASU-P5A (ASUS P5A Pentium ALI ATX Motherboard)

The Asus P5A is indeed your mainboard. Unfortunately it is unlikely that
Asus will produce any further system BIOS updates for this discontinued
product, or any associated products like the controller card.

Given the info you provided in the response to LVTravel (about the ATA133
card supplied with the original mainboard) it's doubtful this controller
fully supports the 160Gb drive.

LVTravel may have a better grasp of this than myself, but I'd suspect that,
at least, a new controller would be required and you may be better advised
to upgrade the mainboard and processor if you really want to utilize the
full drive - there are some well priced upgrade bundles available out there.

Sorry I can't be more help

Did you follow the manufacturer's information on installation to the letter.
Some devices require that drivers be installed before the device is placed
in the computer and others require the devices be placed in the computer
after the device. I am not sure which the Maxtor PCI card requires but I
suspect the driver had to be installed first.

If the instructions tell you to install drivers first, go into Device
Manager and delete all references to the device. Turn off the machine and
pull the card. Turn on the machine and install the drivers from the floppy
that was included with the card. Shut down and turn off the machine and
reinstall the card without the drive being attached. Does Windows now
recognize the device with proper drivers? If so, shut down again and attach
the drive. You will probably have to go into Control Panel, Computer
Management, Disk Management and initialize the drive before it can be used
and seen in Windows Explorer.

Apologies for that info, I've just re-read and realised your controller came
with the *drive*.
It would seem that LVTravel does indeed have a better grasp on this.

I'm spending too much time in the sun.... probably...)
