Hi,

I just purchased a Maxtor 160GB h/d and compared to my 80GB Western
Digital, it is incredibly loud when writing to disk as if the reading
head is scatching the surface.

You can hardly hear my WD writing, but my Maxtor is 10 times more
louder. My question is, is this normal?

Any info appreciated.

Regards,

jaffy

FWIW, mine's pretty quiet.

Can I ask how quite? I mean can you barely hear it? or is it very
noticeable? is it a harse sound or soft? (when writing to disk)

Thanks

I can't hear it over the sound of the fans.

I don't think it is normal. The sound my 120GB Maxtor makes when
writing is only that of the seeking process. A continuous write makes
no sound that can be heard above the disc rotating and the cooling
fan.

I have a 160gb Maxtor (6Y160P0) that I've had for 18 months, and when first
installed I remarked on its noisy nature, as did a friend with the same
drive. But now I don't even notice it. Discerning what is a normal vs.
abnormal sound is subject to the experience of the listener, and its hard to
determine if yours is out of the normal range. After you mess with HD's for
years you know what constitutes a normal vs. abnormal sound. If you're in
doubt, I'd haul an experienced friend over for a beer and a second opinion.
