Maxtor 1394 HD

I constantly get "Windows - Delayed Write Error" when
trying to copy a large number of files to a Maxtor 5000DV,
NTFS format, connected to a built in OHCI 1394 port.

Several files (sometimes several hundred) will copy, then
it will stall on one, the error appears, and the HD
disappears from Disk Manager.

Event IDs 51 and 57 figure prominently.

Another external HD (ACOM Data) works fine.

I too have the same problem with two Maxtor Firewire
drives chained together to a VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394
Host Controller. One Maxtor drive works fine, but the
other:

a. Occasionally returns "Delayed Write Failed" errors
b. Causes CHKDSK to hang at around 92% when running a
full sector scan

Both drives are Optimized for Quick Removal, not
Performanec.

Have scanned the newsgroup and found many similar
problems. In fact, on another system I had, I got
similar errors with a Maxtor internal ATA drive connected
to a secondary Promise 20276 controller. I know that the
Windows KB suggests turning off UDMA, checking BIOS
settings, and confirming an 80 pin ATA cable is used.

I know that the 80-pin cable is not an issue for
Firewire, but I'm not sure what else this could be, other
than a drive fault? (Esp. since the second, identical
drive is error-free.)

I am going to try and reformat the drive, recopy the
contents, and see if that fixes the problem.

Any advice appreciated!

Cheers,
Dan
