I have just switched my peer-to-peer file server from a
Win98SE system to one with Win2000Pro and find that no more
than 12 users can be connected at any time. With Win98,
over 25 were able to without any problems.

1) Is this a built-in limitation of Win2000 or is there
some registry or other setting that can increase the number
of connections? I've searched the MSKB and the Win2000
Resource Kit CD and found zip.

2) If this is a built-in limitation, does the same apply to
WinXP Pro?

Thanks for the help.

10 concurrent connections for win2k pro and a similar restriction in WinXP.
You will need a server OS if you need more connections.

Bob,
Thanks for the prompt response. My customer is going to be
really thrilled with what this "upgrade from Windows 98"
little feature is going to cost him. He has 4 offices
running independent databases and LAN's but with a frequent
need for each office to get into any other.

To keep his accustomed level of connection service with
Win2k as the file server he'll have to spend about $5,000
on Microsoft Win2003 server +client licenses plus maybe
another $5-6000 on computers for servers.

I know exactly what he is going to say: first put back
Win98 as the file server in each office then lets take
another look at Linux.

Have you any idea where this feature of Win2k - the 10 user
limitation, is documented. It seems by the way that this
10 is inaccurate - it gets to 12 before it puts up the
house full sign.

Thanks again.
